Steampunk might be thought of as a motion picture special effect made concrete – the sort of thing that would happen if all the extras on a Sherlock Holmes movie decided to go on holiday at once to H. Ryder Haggard’s Lost World. By way of the Zeppelin works on Lake Constance.
Nevertheless, at the recent Pirates and Fairies Steampunk Ball there were some visual standouts…sights that you just don’t normally see during the 9 to 5 of regular re-enacting. The ho-hum of medieval sword fighting or the plastic world of the LARP cosplay misses out os some things. But run a Steampunk even in a pub and you start to get the Statue of Liberty with a hip flask…
Or the Snake Ladies.
Or The Patron Saint Of The Hip Flask.
And this is all before the Pirates, Fairies, and pox doctors begin. We’re not sure if it’s art, science, or politics.
